Challenge

A critically endangered black rhino calf requires veterinary treatment and intensive nursing, including regular blood tests, medications, frequent bandage changes, and the use of specialised wound care materials and equipment to heal a foot injury.

Solution

The funding raised from this project will directly support the life saving care for Phoebe's calf and other rhinos in need and will help with veterinary treatment and intensive nursing care costs. This includes medications, bandage changes, and the use of specialised wound care materials, equipment and procedures. Consistent and dedicated care is essential to ensure the calf has the best chance of survival and can remain with his mother.

Long-Term Impact

By healing the foot and enabling him to remain with his mother, the calf will be raised naturally, hopefully avoiding the need for hand-rearing in the sanctuary. This will enable him to integrate more swiftly into a wild ecosystem, contributing to the natural biodiversity and increasing his chances of survival in the wild. Such a successful outcome not only supports the calf's development and future but also enhances the overall health of the critically endangered black rhino population.
