This project will set up at least 1000 young people and adults to learn about digital on their phones while they are at home. Covid-19 has forced people into lock-down. In South Africa, this is in a context where people are unaware that the Internet and digital technology can keep them connected to the outside world and will allow them to continue to study and to work. Our mobile-based courses can be done anywhere and any time.
Corvid-19 has closed down schools and workers have been sent home for at least 3 weeks - and probably longer. One of the only ways people can stay connected and continue to work is through the Internet. And yet, the reality is that over 50% of South Africans are not connected to the Internet at all and a significant majority are unable to use the Internet for very much more than just Facebook and WhatsApp.
Our courses are FREE and MOBILE-BASED. People can continue to learn at home during lock-down. They can do them on their phones. They can have fun and learn at the same time. And for those who are nervous of learning on their own, we support them by calling them and talking them through any hurdles they experience. It is distance learning at its best designed for those who are least equipped to do that. It allows us to continue opening digital doors even during this difficult time.
At least 1000 more South Africans will know how to use and take more advantage of digital technology. They will be aware of the risks of digital technology and, at the same time, will use it critically to protect themselves and others. This will allow them take advantage of the social and economic benefits of the digital age. In addition, this will boost local economic development and increase economic opportunities for the currently digitally excluded in South Africa.
