With $3,000 in grant funds, NFTE Chicago will be able to provide experiential training seminars for each of our classrooms during the 2013-2014 school year. Experiential learning is key to keeping young people engaged in school and on track to graduate.
Every 29 seconds an American youth drops out of high school - that's 7,000 young people per day or 1.2 million each year. One-third of all high school students, and nearly half of all African American and Latino youth, do not graduate. Most of those students reported that they would have remained in school if it were more relevant to real life. In order to ensure students are staying in school and graduating, NFTE's priority is to make learning more relevant to keep students engaged.
Each NFTE lesson is delivered through both traditional learning channels (textbook and lecture-based methods) and experiential learning activities. NFTE Chicago provides entrepreneurial training in each classroom - a treasure trove of learning materials that bring NFTE's lessons on sales, marketing, and business financials to life. With $3,000 in funding ($70 per classroom), NFTE Chicago could arm each student with such lessons in the classroom, keeping students engaged in classroom learning.
This program will teach students the necessary skills to start their ventures as a part of the NFTE curriculum and write their business plans. NFTE spurs its participants to graduate high school and dare to dream of a brighter future. Whether they pursue higher education, enter the workforce or start their own business, NFTE instills an entrepreneurial mindset in young people so they can plan for success. Since 1987 NFTE has worked with over 500,000 students across the U.S. and around the world.
