More than one million students give up on school each year in America and 50% of those dropouts come from just 12% of schools. City Year AmeriCorps members serve where the need is greatest. In Milwaukee Public Schools, where the high school graduation rate is only 63%, City Year serves in eight schools with 3rd through 9th grade students to get them on track to success. Serving on teams of 8-10, City Year corps members provide focused, research-driven interventions to underperforming students. As near-peers, corps members are uniquely positioned to form a strong bond with students to help them succeed. In partnership with school staff, City Year corps members monitor student performance on the early warning indicators of dropping out - poor attendance, disruptive behavior and poor course performance in math or English. In addition to providing small group and individual student support corps members provide whole-class support, run after-school programs to extend the learning day and put on whole school educational events.
During the 2012-2013 school year, City Year Milwaukee corps members served over 5,610 students in eight schools, with 1,630 of these receiving focused support in math, English, attendance or behavior coaching. Your donation helped a team of eight corps members provide focused tutoring and mentoring services to 200 students to get them on track to success. Each of Milwaukee’s eight teams provided over 2,100 hours of whole class support and 720 hours of focused interventions for underperforming students in English and math, while also spending over 450 hours with students in after-school/extended learning time space. In Milwaukee, 136 students receiving attendance coaching improved their attendance, with 111 of these no longer being chronically absent by April.
Please see the attached corps member testimonials which are two examples of students we served this year.
