The Haslam BGC "Hearts for Haiti" would provide two nutritious Christmas meals, Christmas presents, and classroom supplies for girls living in the Nid Enfant de Redempteur (Children of the Redeemed) Orphanage in Camatin South East, Haiti. As part of a yearlong service project, Club members will travel to Haiti to help build a school, provide Christmas meals and presents, and provide English books translated into Creole for classroom instruction in Haiti.
There are 26 girls living in the Nid Enfant du Redempteur orphanage. Funds from this project will provide a Christmas gift of a new dress, flip flops, and a small toy and meals for the children in the school the girls attend. In addition, the teens at the Boys & Girls Club want to learn about the conditions of the poor in other parts of the world and ways in which they can provide direct help to alleviate issues of poverty. This will equally be an educational opportunity for the Club teens.
While this project will address the immediate educational needs of school children in Haiti, by providing books for classroom instruction, it will also provide opportunities for Club teens to learn about the needs of the poor in the world and concrete steps that can be taken to alleviate those needs.
150 children in Haiti will receive Christmas gifts and meals and additional services provided by teens volunteering at their school over the Christmas holidays. Club teens will learn about world poverty issues and some practical, hands-on ways to address those issues.
