Challenge

AIDS orphans in Sub-Saharan Africa are in a precarious situation, especially when they live in a country where they have no one to care for them. With no income, they cannot purchase food nor pay for school fees, rent or clothes. This exacerbates their terrible situation, leaving them either dependent on others or with nothing with which to survive.

Solution

22 orphaned youth will receive husbandry, veterinary and gardening training, as well as marketing and budgeting trainings, along with 3 full-grown female goats and seeds for gardens. The goats will give the children milk to drink and sell, as well as manure for their personal gardens. The flocks will grow and the youth can start selling and bartering the animals in order to pay for their school fees, food, and other basic needs. Transportation, vaccines, and ongoing support is included.

Long-Term Impact

Once youth are given the tools to get out of poverty, they rarely want to go back to life before the change. Due to this, we have a great success rate with this type of project and children are moving forward, helping themselves and their communities. Trainings received are trickled down to other community members and to younger children, reviving once-dead communities and breaking the cycle of poverty and welfare. We expect that 94 children will be directly affected as siblings will benefit.
