Life in a squatter camp is devoid of many things -plumbing, electricity, heating, and paved roads. But for a child, the absence of green grass and a safe place to play is sorely missed. Christel House South Africa(CHSA) is a safe haven for these children to learn, play and grow. This project will build sports fields for over 700 impoverished students and their community.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Most of CHSA's 733 students have never had the opportunity to kick a ball around their front yard or bike to the local park. With 31 murders and attempted murders occurring each day in the Western Cape and a drug crime rate 4 times higher than the national average, our kids are rarely able to be in a safe and positive environment outside of school. We need your help to give CHSA students a safe and nurturing space where they can learn, play and grow - an advantage few in their community have.
How will this project solve this problem?
Learning good sportsmanship, working hard to succeed, performing as part of a team and pushing to achieve goals are all important life lessons learned through sports competition. All children deserve a place to play, run, practice soccer, and learn to ride a bike - and to learn these importance lessons. We want to make improvements to our fields so that our students, and others from the surrounding communities, can have these opportunities. Help give our kids a safe place to play.
Potential Long Term Impact
The reality in Cape Town is bleak, but CHSA is making a great impact. 100% of our students graduate from high school and 95% of our graduates are in the workforce or higher education. These facts are astounding considering the national 20% graduation rate and 24% unemployment rate in South Africa. By building sports fields, we will not only be able to provide our current 733 students with a safe and nurturing place to play, but also future students and the surrounding community.
