Grass root level Workshop.

Workshop at Solapur district
Workshop at Solapur district

While working on adoption we often came across one key question- Why are the adoption numbers in the country so low? Why, in a country with a population of 25 million children in need of care and protection, do only 5000 adoptions happen? More importantly, why has the position not changed over the last decade? On the contrary, we have heard or read in the newspaper many children are abandoned in unsafe places like garbage and public places. Which is alarming as the child trafficking rackets are prevalent and always are in search of such an easy prey. This fact helped us to demonstrate some of the possibilities and proposed a way forward for suitable and sustained action.

We came up with a grass root awareness program. We designed this program for the stakeholders who are community workers and handles adolescent and pregnant women’s group from their respective communities. These are the ladies who has in-depth knowledge of the things happening in their area. We came with presentation for these ladies wherein they were made aware of the options of safe abandoning which ultimately can increase the number of children eligible for adoption. Therefore a motivation was given to them letting them how a vulnerable child can have a happy life. And they can be the reason of this major change.

There is great need of awareness for the Grass root level workshop for ICDS workers, PHC worker, Fertility Clinics and local Gynecologist. As these are the people closely associated with the community and knows the situation where the birth mother/family is not in a situation to take care of the child and they are in dilemma where to abandon the child.

This workshop include a discussion of their knowledge about the topic. They will be explained the

  • Rehabilitation measures available for any child who is without parental care like Sponsorship, Foster care, Adoption and the last resort institutionalization.
  • They are made clear with difference between Adoption agencies and CCI.
  • Admission of the children in CCI/SAA through Parents, relatives, Well- wisher, CWC, Police.
  • Situation/ causes/ reasons due to which the child is abandoned.
  • Admission of the child in SAA (new born to 6 yrs.), Restoration effort.
  • Role of the Grass root level worker, Steps they have to follow for safe abandoning of the child.
  • To avoid the children from getting Trafficked, Abused and child labored. Children bought in to adoption stream will have a complete rehabilitation.

We conducted such a block level workshops at the district called Solapur in Maharashtra from India. There were 98 ladies who attended this workshop and was very enthusiastic to know about the process. We also informed them about the options available for safely abandoning of the child. This information was well appreciated by the whole group and we hope now that the community ladies are aware there will be less cases of unsafe abandoning of the children and if that happens community people are now aware whom to approach for the child’s safety.
