10 fawns who would have died without compassionate intervention by caring people now browse, run and play in the wooded habitat you helped make possible through your gift.
It is mid-November, and most of the fawns are six months old, though there was one late baby who arrived in early August and she and two injured fawns will shortly join the little family already housed in the pre-release habitats built to honor "Jilly," a deer who touched our hearts in a special way.
The project you helped to fund is located in the country, where Fellow Mortals owns 52 acres of hardwood and pine trees, fields and pond. Two one-half acre habitats were enclosed on a ridge formed by a terminal moraine. The topography is rolling and gives the fawns hills to run up and down between the hickory and pine trees that provide shelter from the rain, sun and snow.
The wire fence on the perimeter of the habitats is 10 foot high, to keep out predators, like coyote. The stockade fence that surrounds the outside wire is 6' high, to provide privacy and a sense of safety for the fawns, as well as limiting any view of human activity.
Though we did not succeed in meeting our goal for this project, we are thankful for what you gave, and for the kindness of the fence contractor who is allowing us time to find the rest of the funds. Thanks to you, we accomplished what was necessary to give this year's fawns--and fawns in the years to come--the room and privacy they need to grow strong and wild before release.
Thank you for being a part of 'Jilly's Legacy.' Your gift will be making a difference for years to come.
