Your donation supports 60 girls in South Africa by giving them the opportunity to learn about peer pressure, how to identify it, and what the consequences of peer pressure can be. During a football-centered workshop, the participants are encouraged to discuss instances of peer pressure, and how they found or did not find the courage to say "no". Further, they learn various techniques they can use to avoid being in an uncomfortable situation.
This workshop breaks peer pressure down; it helps girls understand what it is, how to identify the signs of peer pressure, and how to deal with uncomfortable situations. The workshop teaches the girls that being themselves is okay, and that they do not need to conform to the standards of others. It also helps those who pressurize their peers understand the consequences of their actions.
Many girls suffer due to peer pressure, especially those unaware of what it is. They engage in activities that are unhealthy, such as drinking alcohol or engaging in risky sexual behavior. At times paired with a low self-esteem, this may make girls act out of character to gain approval from their peers. Peer pressure often leads to drug and alcohol abuse, unwanted pregnancies, or simply to girls no longer feeling worthy and therefore no longer caring about what their achievements.
Through a three-tiered approach, girls are encouraged to put their own needs first, and to trust that the healthy and informed choices they make will help ensure they are not taken advantage. As a result, they will be able to develop into stronger and happier girls and young women, who attend school and seek the most from their education, without the fear of thinking they are inadequate.
