Girls Have Scholarships

Life Planning Workshop

Our Maya Ixil families in the mountans of Guatemala are very poor and cannot pay for the tuition and school supplies. Parents and girls met with the Education Committee to ask if they could help us go to school. We want to study. We want to learn new skills. A plan was made for Girl Gardens Grow Scholars to raise money to pay for tuition and provide food for us and our families.

In Chajul Guatemala, few girls finish the public education that is available through grade 6 and very very few can pay the fees and tuition for middle school.

The Maya Ixil Education Committee worked hard with the community and the local public schools to develop a new pathway for poor families to afford to send their girls and boys to middle school.

The Pulbic Evening school accepted 26 Maya Ixil scholarship students for the year term that started February 2017. Thirteen of the scholarship  students are girls. The students attend The Public Evening School with support from donors who cover their tuition, books and supplies. The Maya Ixil Education committee has made collaborative agreements with other non-profits in the area to provide these scholarship students with access to their library, and participation in a series of 13 workshops throughout the school term of 2017. Another donor provide supplies and materials for enrichment activities for all 26 scholars. The first of these workshops had 100% attendance, and was presented by a Peace Corpos volunteer anda local non-profit on Preventing teen pregnacy and Life planning .  Photos are below in the report.

The Maya Ixil Education Committee has leased an Education Casa in the center of Chajul.  Donors have paid for a local carpenter to build tables and benches that can be used for group lessons, or taken outside to the garden to use for voacational and interactive activities.

A donor has provided funds for a major activity on Earth Day that will center on recycling as a community activity.  The 26 students will have a lesson on cooking with a clean kitchen, and demonstrations of food that is unhealthy , and will prepare a meal of healthy food and beverages.

This project has been fully funded by other donors, and will close its fundraising on Global Giving.Thank you for your support for the Girls of Chajul to provide them with an education.
