Rural India faces a major shortage of public transport facilities. This is the second most common cause after poverty that deprives children from villages to complete schooling. Hundred of girls travel long distances every day to reach secondary schools leading to huge dropouts. Therefore, we at Light of Life Trust, a non-profit working in rural Maharashtra, aim to build a bicycle bank to support 100 girl children reach their secondary schools and complete their education, in the long term.
Our focus is in Washim district located in Maharastra, India where schools are 8 to 9 km away from villages which causes a major hindrance for the girl child to travel to school. Those girls who want to attend school from long distances have to travel in buses which are not regular. Also these girl students cannot attend our classes / workshops early in the morning or on the day of school holiday. This cycle bank will help the girl children to commute to school and attend classes at LOLT centre.
We want to invest in the dreams of girl children by building a cycle bank of 100 cycles. The cost per bicycle is approx. Rs 3500/- .The children currently in their secondary school will use it for 3-5 years, to complete their schooling. After this, the students will return the bicycles in good condition to Light of Life Trust, and the same will be passed on to younger students entering our Anando Programme ensuring the continuity of this project and benefiting more number of girl children.
Good quality durable bicycles will be provided to each girl child at the center for a period of 3 - 5 years or till they continue their education in order to ensure regular attendance in schools and attend classes at our LOLT centre too. Once they complete their education they will return the bicycle in good condition to LOLT so that the same can be then be handed over to younger students. Thus enabling more number of students to attend their school and complete their secondary education.
