By Brett Perl | Providing More than Financial Funding
We have begun to hone in on the financial model we will be bringin to Haiti. This involves how all costs will be divided once on-the-ground, such as how much one will pay for a stool, and how much a furniture builder will then pay a bottle collector, a seasmtress, etc. However, something we did not expect was providing more for the bottle collectors than money.
The bottle collectors have been generally children in a given area where we have identified furniture makers. These children have been trying to collect 41 empty plastic bottles using only their hands and arms to carry these bottles. However, because we have begun to employ seamstresses, we have been able to provide sewn bags to the bottle collectors, which can then double as a slipcover for a stool. Not only this, but the cover can be used for any other use an ordinary bag would be used for, like going to the market. This is an outcome we had not anticipated when brainstorming our project.
