Unfortunately, NFTE Philadelphia’s project to give our young entrepreneurs access to business mentors and coaches did not reach the critical mass of donations we were looking for. That being said, we are incredibly grateful to those who did donate through the GlobalGiving platform! Funds raised from the project paid for classroom expenses for the time our volunteer were working with our young entrepreneurs, including curriculum costs, training programs, and experiential activities led by our mentors. Thanks to your donations, and other funds used, we were able to give our students in Philadelphia the additional experience of hearing and learning from local professionals who have the first-hand knowledge of managing a business. This expertise was vital during the final project of the course, the creation of a business plan to pitch an idea capable of winning start-up capital.
The NFTE Volunteer of the Year Award nominee for NFTE Philadelphia was Markques M. of EY. Markques has devoted countless hours to the students of the Philadelphia area, as a business plan judge, a classroom guest speaker, and business mentor. Along with over 30 additional EY volunteers, he participated in a recent EY Connect Day, where the company’s volunteers and NFTE mentors met with our students to provide insight on the entrepreneurial mindset: that set of attitudes, skills, and behaviors that students need to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. Markques was a particularly inspiring business mentor to our students this past year (his third as a NFTE business coach) – whether it meant mentoring a student for competition, helping students make adjustments to their pitches, to providing the much needed moral support and lending a hand wherever needed.
Besides the personal support of Markques and the other volunteers, NFTE Philadelphia is also grateful for EY’s partnership throughout the year. A dedicated supporter of our classrooms, EY’s volunteers also serve as scorekeepers and judges during the NFTE Philadelphia Regional Business Plan Challenge. We are grateful for their support, as well as yours. Thanks so much again for your donations through the Global Giving platform.
