City Year Los Angeles corps members serve beyond the classroom, providing after-school homework help and enrichment programs at 23 schools around the city. Each team begins their service before the first bells rings and stay until the last child leaves their after-school program. Help a team of corps members provide a month of science enrichment to 35 middle-school students. Daily activities might include creating a rocket, egg drops, or a game learning the periodic table of elements.
More than 1 million students give up on school each year. This year, City Year Los Angeles' 275 young leaders will complete more than 467,500 hours of service in 23 schools around the city. Many of these schools are among the lowest performing 5% in the state. City Year partners with Los Angeles Unified School District to support their goals and provide the dedicated extra people required to make a difference with students who are at risk of dropping out.
In an after-school program, corps members coach students toward behaviors and attitudes that reflect a strong, purpose-driven character through general instruction, mentoring and incentive programs. Enrichment programs are proven to create positive school environments and expand the learning day for students with creative opportunities for growth.
Students who progress to 10th grade with their peers are four times more likely to graduate than students who fall behind. Our Long-Term Impact goal is to ensure 80% of the students in the schools City Year serves reach 10th grade on track and on time, serving the majority of at-risk students in the locations where City Year serves. City Year focuses that service in communities where the dropout challenge is most concentrated, ultimately serving two thirds of the nation's dropouts.
