Report on Boston JA Teen Program

By Emily Neill | President, JA of Northern New England

Junior Achievement of Northern New England is grateful to the donors of the GlobalGiving Campaign.  Our project was to provide financial literacy education to 323 “at-risk” teens in the Boston area.  We are pleased to report that we delivered 14 programs to students at 4 different locations, including Boston Day and Evening Academy, Timilty Middle School, Roslindale Community Center and the YMCA of East Boston.

What we must remember is that the JA experience can be equally as rewarding for our volunteers as it can be for the students we serve.  Please take a moment to read this testimonial from a volunteer at the Timilty Middle School:

“I just recently completed 7 weeks of Junior Achievement mentoring at the James P. Timilty Middle School - two weeks ago this Monday to be exact. My Mondays have never felt so empty since I concluded my assignment.  I went into this mentoring experience hoping that, at the very least, I would teach a student something that hadn't learned before. What I didn't expect was how the students taught me more about myself than I ever imagined. I could see my future in the eyes. My favorite moments were when a student discovered he/she really enjoyed doing certain tasks and they made the connection between their skills and interests.  It was like a light bulb had gone off in their head - that they could find a career in a field/area where they are able to apply the skills they didn't realize they had.  As I went through the exercises each week it became ALL of us that were learning something new.  Initially, I was a bit apprehensive about participating in the program,  as I thought I was not accomplished enough (lawyer, doctor, professor, CEO).  And then a light bulb went off in my head when I realized that anyone can help make a difference in these students' lives, as long as you care. "Rewarding" is not a strong enough of a word to describe how fulfilled I walked away from my 7 weeks at the Timilty, "changed" would be better.”  Linaris (Lini) Casillas, Junior Achievement Volunteer
