The tropical hot and dry climate in Cambodia provides many challenges to education, particularly when the temperature peaks during the hot season from March to June. Temperatures can reach on average 34C (93.2F) daily, and even climb as high as 40C (104F), causing significant challenges to education. Students are faced with issues such as poor concentration and discomfort while learning, which has a detrimental impact on their academic performance and increases the likelihood of absenteeism. Furthermore, enduring long periods of time in high temperatures can harm the physical well-being of students, resulting in dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and headaches reducing the capacity of children to learn even further. Therefore, Salariin Kampuchea Organization undertook a fundraising project targeted at raising money to purchase 5 vertical water mist cooling fans, to be installed in every classroom.
The introduction of our project on GlobalGiving was very successful, with generous donations from across the world helping us to not only meet our targets, but exceed them!
These fans were then purchased and have subsequently been installed in each classroom. Our ability to purchase such large fans (at 30” each), have significantly improved ventilation within classrooms, while the use of water and ice for additional cooling functions has been crucial in maintaining a more comfortable educational environment, helping to maximise the potential of our students.
Impact
The impact of these fans were present immediately, increasing the enthusiasm of students within the school and providing them with greater comfort and focus within their classrooms. These fans will continue to improve their learning environment and guarantee regular attendance, particularly combatting the worsening impacts of rising temperatures due to the climate crisis. Children and vulnerable communities are disproportionately affected and placed at increased risk of the impacts of climate change, with the Children’s Climate Risk Index placing Cambodia in the top third of countries facing significant risk. This demonstrates the significance of these fans, protecting those most at risk and supporting our students while they develop essential skills for their futures in society and the local workforce.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who supported our project through GlobalGiving. Your support is instrumental in developing educational opportunities for our students and with your ongoing support we will continue with our mission, providing essential education for children and adults in our community.
Warmest regards,
The Salariin Kampuchea Team
