This project will help get twice as many students into after school programs in Zinacantan. The center now serves approximately 25 kids in two after school classes, and is a meeting space for 20 Mayan women from MSV. With this project it will be able to double the capacity of the Learning Center.
Since 2014 Impacto supported two visionary Mayan leaders, sisters Xunka and Yoli, to actualize their vision to create a community learning center in Zinacantan, Chiapas. The Learning Center now houses two programs: An after school programming and the Mujeres Sembrando La Vida (MSV) women's weaving collective. In four years, Xunka and Yoli's programs have already out-grown the space. There are simply more children and women who want to access these programs than can fit in the space!
Building a second floor to the learning center building, will effectively double the potential impact of these already very successful programs, helping get twice as many students into after school programs in Zinacantan.
The project will help doubling the capacity of the Learning Center, to 50 children and 40 artisan women. These programs bring much needed support to the families of Zinacantan, and use two of the most effective ways to stop the cycle of poverty: education for children and economic empowerment of women.
