"My book is filled up, sir!" With these words the children enter the school office and let us know they need a replacement exercise book.
Student materials are just one of the many costs that parents end up having to cover, depsite the assurances that education in Kenya is free. Uniforms, text and exercise books, lunches, photocopy paper and even additional costs directly related to the upkeep of the school, are all regularly passed on to the families. This makes getting a "free" education difficult for many, and is one of the main reasons a large percentage of students are unable to complete their schooling.
At Kookaburra, with the help of our supporters, we provide free text and exercise books for all our students. By taking this burden away from the families, it leaves them with a little more money for running their homes and also ensures that all students in the school have access to the same materials.
Unfortunately, with this project we have not met the target for book purchases, so we have only purchased enough exercise books for Term 1. However, if you would still like to contribute, you can donate to the main project on our GlobalGiving page and that money will be used to ensure we still have a stock of exercise books for next term when students come into the office with the words, "My book is filled up, sir!"
