We would like to thank you for your donation towards an anaesthetic monitor!
With the support from other fundraising, we were able to buy parts to upgrade our current anaesthetic monitor so it can now monitor our patients’ CO2 levels. This will be used during our upcoming Complex Surgical Mission in Ethiopia, where we will treat 50 patients with complex facial disfigurements.
The current resources in Yekatit-12, the government run hospital in Addis Ababa where we operate, are limited - the patient monitor will ensure our patients are monitored during their surgery in a safe manner, limiting complications which could be easily avoidable.
With your help, we will be able to help more patients like 12 year-old Hafis, who we treated in our 2018 mission. Hafis struggled to breathe, eat and talk because of an enormous tumour growing in his mouth. He was also in a lot of pain.
The operation was difficult but the tumour was removed and the final result was extraordinary - Hafis was almost unrecognisable! After his operation, Hafis went to recuperate in the Cheshire Rehabilitation Centre just outside Addis. Slowly, the shy boy we had met a few weeks before started to emerge from his shell – he began to smile and play with the other children.
It really was amazing to see the impact surgery had on Hafis – he no longer covered his face, could eat properly and close his mouth. He had been out of school because he was being bullied and insulted – he is now able to attend school again and live a life free from stigma.
Once again, thank you so much for your donation – it will make a huge difference to the lives of children like Hafis! If you are interested in finding out more about our Complex Mission, you can read more about it here: https://www.projectharar.org/2019-complex-surgical-mission
