Just this week we received some great photos from the director of our new Pediatric Heart Center in Managua, showing us just how important syringe pumps are to the treatment of little patients recovering from open-heart surgery. During the critical period immediately following surgery, these modern machines dispense medicines in the correct dosage and with the correct timing.
In the photos, you see little Erickson who lives in Managua, is 2 years old, and has had surgery for a condition called tetralogy of fallot. He was born with it. His heart was not pumping properly so that blood was not being well-provided to his lungs. Before the surgery, he was too tired to thrive. Now after surgery at the skilled hands of the local team, he will be the child he was born to be.
Thanks to the Surgeons of Hope volunteer teams who have visited frequently to provide collaborative training, the local team has the surgical skill. Local doctors have also received training at Latin American children's teaching hospitals through the efforts of Surgeons of Hope.
And thanks to our GlobalGiving donors who help us from time to time, our program is working to underpin lasting progress. The progress is real and positive.
There are just seven days remaining in this project and we are sharing these photos with you in the hope that you will share with others who might be eager to help us and the children we serve.
Your help has been noteworthy and we remain grateful. Please consider an additional donation before this project ends to bring us closer to purchasing these pumps.
