Connecting Youth to the Digital World: Knowledge, Confidence and Responsible Technology Use

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

Technology is changing how people learn, communicate, work and access information. Yet many young people in underserved communities remain on the wrong side of the digital divide.

Our Youth Computer Skilling Program is designed to help close this gap by creating safe and structured opportunities for young people to learn, practice and understand digital technology.

Participants receive practical exposure to computers and are guided through foundational skills that can be useful in education, employment and everyday life. Training may include typing, document preparation, information management, digital communication, internet research and basic computer applications.

An equally important part of the program is responsible technology use. Young people need to understand that the digital world brings both opportunities and responsibilities. Through mentorship and guidance, we encourage participants to think critically about online information, protect their personal information, communicate respectfully and use technology for constructive purposes.

This combination of technical knowledge and responsible digital citizenship can help young people become more confident and purposeful technology users.

For some participants, their first experience with a computer may become the beginning of a much larger journey. It may encourage them to pursue further education, learn a new skill, apply for an opportunity or explore an entrepreneurial idea.

Our challenge is that demand for digital learning continues to exceed the resources available. More computers, training materials, trainers and learning opportunities are needed to reach additional youth.

Donor partnership can help us bring digital learning closer to young people who have been excluded from many technology-based opportunities.

By supporting this program, you can help a young person move from simply hearing about technology to confidently using it as a tool for learning, communication and future development.
