Closing the Digital Gap for Vulnerable Young People

By IVAN SSEGUYA | Project leader

The digital divide can deepen existing inequalities. Young people from disadvantaged communities may leave school without ever having meaningful access to computers, internet resources or structured digital training. This lack of exposure can make it even harder for them to compete for employment and educational opportunities.

F SSIBU Mission Foundation aims to address this challenge by equipping a community learning initiative with 20 computers specifically to support school dropouts and vulnerable young people.

The program will provide practical computer training designed to meet learners at their current level. Participants will begin with basic computer literacy before progressing toward more practical applications. Training will include typing, document creation, spreadsheets, presentations, online research, email communication, digital safety and introductory digital entrepreneurship.

The learning environment will also encourage participants to develop discipline, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. These complementary skills can strengthen their ability to apply digital knowledge in workplaces, businesses and further education.

The 20 computers will provide the practical foundation required for effective training. Instead of learning about technology without being able to practice, participants will have opportunities to work directly with computers during training sessions.

Donor support is essential to making this opportunity accessible to young people who may otherwise remain digitally excluded. Contributions can help purchase computers, establish reliable internet connectivity, provide learning materials, maintain equipment and support qualified trainers.

The program is designed with sustainability in mind. Once established, the computers can support successive groups of learners, multiplying the value of the initial investment. A single contribution toward equipment can therefore continue generating educational and livelihood benefits beyond the first group of participants.

We invite donors to join us in closing the digital gap and ensuring that school dropout does not mean exclusion from the digital economy.

Together, we can transform access to technology into access to opportunity.
