Empowering Families for the Digital Age: Parents and Young People Learning Cyber Safety Together

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

Our computer skilling initiative recognizes that protecting young people requires more than training children alone. Parents, caregivers, and community members also need the knowledge to understand the opportunities and risks created by digital technology.

We are therefore creating opportunities for communities to learn together about responsible technology use, online safety, and digital development. Parents can learn how to support their children while they use computers and smartphones, recognize potential online risks, encourage responsible internet behavior, and communicate openly about digital experiences.

At the same time, girls and boys gain practical computer skills that can support their education and future livelihoods. This creates a stronger connection between young people and their families. Parents become better equipped to guide their children, while children gain confidence to seek support when they encounter challenges online or offline.

The program also contributes to keeping adolescents focused on positive development. By providing structured learning opportunities and connecting digital skills with future education and employment, we encourage girls and boys to invest their time in constructive activities. This can complement other community interventions aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy, school dropout, early sexual activity, and other vulnerabilities.

As we expand to new communities, we want cybersecurity awareness to become a shared community responsibility rather than an issue addressed only after something goes wrong.

Donor support allows us to reach households that may otherwise remain excluded from digital education. Funding can support community training sessions, learning materials, internet access, trainers, awareness campaigns, and practical demonstrations.

Our goal is to build communities where young people are digitally capable, parents are digitally informed, and families understand how to create safer environments for technology use. By investing in both generations, donors help create stronger families and communities prepared to benefit from the digital economy.
