Building Digital Confidence, Reducing Idle Time: Skills That Keep Young People Learning and Growing

By Seguya Ivan | Project leader

Computer training is helping transform how young people use their free time. Instead of leaving girls and boys without constructive activities, our program creates opportunities for them to learn, practice, collaborate, and develop practical skills.

Structured learning can play an important role in adolescent development. When young people have positive activities, supportive mentors, and clear goals, they have greater opportunities to focus on education and personal growth. Our computer skilling sessions provide exactly this kind of environment.

Participants learn basic and intermediate digital skills that can support their education and future livelihoods. They practice creating documents, preparing school assignments, conducting online research, communicating digitally, organizing information, and using productivity applications. More importantly, they develop patience, concentration, confidence, and problem-solving abilities.

The initiative also contributes to our broader efforts to reduce factors that can contribute to teenage pregnancy and school dropout. By keeping girls and boys actively involved in learning, we are encouraging them to prioritize education, develop aspirations, and think about their long-term goals. The program complements, rather than replaces, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education, parental guidance, mentorship, and community protection efforts.

We are committed to reaching more young people by expanding training into new communities. This expansion will help us provide structured opportunities to adolescents who may otherwise have limited access to technology.

Donors make this transformation possible. Their support can provide computers, connectivity, training resources, mentorship, and opportunities for young people to practice what they learn.

Every hour spent learning a useful digital skill is an investment in a young person's future. Together, we can help young people replace idle time with purposeful learning and turn digital access into confidence, opportunity, and resilience.
