This project will further Vaga Lume's mission of empowering children in the Amazon to find their voices and dream bigger through literacy and connection. The United Nations's annual climate conference, COP30, will be held in Belem, the Metropolis of the Amazon. This project will provide funding and support to allow children from the Amazon to attend trainings and engage in discussions at COP30, being active participants in the climate conversations that shape their homes and impact their lives.
The Amazon is one of the most critical regions in the world, both environmentally and culturally. Despite its vitality to the global community, the region is often overlooked. 20% of residents in the Amazon are considered to be functionally illiterate, and 40% are considered to be living in poverty. Concurrently, the people of the Amazon, especially the youth, are left out of vital climate discussions, despite being at the forefront of the devastating effects of climate change each day.
This project will allow Amazonian youth to amplify their voices by joining the vital discussions occurring at COP30, where they will advocate for their communities and the future of the Amazon. At the event, they will also join Vaga Lume in celebrating the inauguration of a new sustainable community library in Castanhal (just 1 hour from Belem) that will provide literacy resources to hundreds. Through this project, we hope to empower the youth while also promoting investment in the Amazon.
At its core, Vaga Lume's mission is to empower the youth and support the vitality of the Amazon through literacy and cultural connection. This project is no different; it will uplift the voices of the Amazonian youth, showing them that their voices have power, and inspire them to dream bigger. Their participation in COP30 will not only bring meaningful change in climate policy, but it will showcase the merit of the Amazon and its people, promoting long-term investment in the region.
