Summary

10 year project anniversary! Help over 50 children and youth (ages 4-21) with disabilities in rural Honduras continue to receive health care and education in 2020. In addition to supplementing healthcare costs, the program provides one-on-one educational support with trained specialists, while reducing stigmatization and affecting the mindset of multiple communities in a positive way toward individuals with special needs.

Challenge

Children with disabilities in Honduras, one of the poorest countries in Central America, are stigmatized and rarely receive support, making them one of the most vulnerable populations in the region. Many schools have no accommodations for children with special needs, and it is difficult for parents to access much needed additional resources. This project will assist 50 children and young adults, ages 4-21, with special needs through 2020.

Solution

Un Mundo's Special Education/Heath Project trains teachers, classroom aides and volunteers on special needs education techniques, supplies school materials to 50 special needs students, and provides physical or occupational therapy. By participating, these students can become self-reliant and productive citizens. Their parents, who also receive Un Mundo training, have formed a strong advocacy network to ensure the children get the support they need at home and in their lives outside school.

Long-Term Impact

10 year project anniversary! Through comprehensive, long-term special education, health care, and parental support, Un Mundo has successfully transforming the lives of over 400 children who want to become self-reliant, productive citizens. Since the program started in 2009, it has grown 5x in size with the ability to serve 50 children annually. Un Mundo's holistic approach of education, health care and advocacy for children with disabilities in Honduras is making a lasting impact in the region.
