According to Metro Denver Homeless Initiative's point in time survey done in January of 2012, there were 12,605 homeless people in Denver. Of those individuals, 44% were women and 64% were adults who had children. In fact 1 in 4 homeless individuals is a child. As leaders in the Denver community, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver's Keystone Clubs want to have an impact on these statistics by providing the homeless in Denver with supplies such as food, clothing, toiletries and other basic needs.
Though we could never solve homelessness with just one project, by collecting donations such as food, clothing, toiletries, baby items, etc. our Denver Keystone Clubs would be helping to provide several homeless families, or youth, in the metro area with basic supplies they need to get back on their feet. In addition, Keystone Club members need to understand the issues that the poor face as well as how to confront those issues with hands-on services.
Keystone Club members would help re-build and provide basic needs to as many families and children as possible. We plan to partner with several non-profits in our community who are already helping homeless families in a variety of ways, but rely on donations and funding from individuals in the community to do it. We would also fight hunger through the food donations. In addition, Keystone teens will learn valuable project planning skills and about poverty issues first hand.
By helping to get homeless families and children involved with one of the many non-profits in Denver who provide services, many long term effects can take place. They can build positive, supportive relationships with people who can help them with issues when they arise, gain access to materials that will meet their basic needs (food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) and have access to education and support services for their specific needs. We will help as many homeless as possible with our resources
