In 2012, only 22% of the student population at Tyler Elementary had met or exceeded standards in math and 37% in reading per DC CAS scores. Educators are encountering an increasing range of skill levels in their classrooms and struggling with a lack of assistance to help bridge those gaps. Parents and students are facing a need so great that the programs available to them are increasingly insufficient.
Research has demonstrated that residencies and programs that integrate the arts into the curricula reduce social tension in school by increasing student confidence and academic success. These students will be engaged in a movement art form that will allow them to channel excess energy they cannot typically release during the school day. Additionally, they will be exploring basic math concepts in music and movement through patterns and counting as well as reading concepts through story building.
By working with students, parents and teachers simultaneously, we increase the sustainability of our programs. After our team has left the school, the network of trained adults will continue to support and encourage teaching core concepts through the arts. The reach of this project continues to grow exponentially long after our programs have concluded.
