DAKTARI is facing a serious crisis after days of relentless rain and flooding. Our camp suffered major damage, leaving us largely isolated and unable to operate. Thanks to incredible teamwork, staff, volunteers, and all animals are safe, but we sadly lost two meerkats. For our founders, seeing 20 years of hard work and passion damaged has been deeply traumatic. Education programs and volunteers were cancelled for safety. Without urgent repairs, we cannot reopen or continue our mission
This project will address several urgent problems caused by the flooding. The destruction of the bridge has left the camp without safe access, while severely damaged internal roads limit the transport of children, staff, food, and essential supplies. Flooded animal enclosures require urgent repairs to ensure animal welfare. Due to these safety risks, children's education programs had to be suspended, and volunteer cancellations and refunds have created additional financial strain.
This microproject addresses urgent flood damage threatening DAKTARI's ability to operate. Rebuilding the destroyed bridge, our only safe access to the camp, without which we cannot reopen (estimated $4,000). Repairing unsafe internal roads to safely transport children, staff, volunteers, food, supplies, and emergencies (estimated $2,000). Restoring flooded animal enclosures to protect animal welfare (estimated $900). These repairs are essential to reconnect the camp and resume our mission
By repairing critical safety risks, this project will allow DAKTARI to reopen and welcome children back as soon as possible. Restoring access and infrastructure protects 20 years of hard work and passion invested by the founders in building a place for education and conservation. Reopening the camp ensures our environmental education program can continue, inspiring children from nearby villages to care for nature and wildlife and strengthening long-term conservation impact.
