Sundarbans, a World Heritage site and the only mangrove forest in the world with tigers, is experiencing the adverse effects of climate change, There is temperature rise and sea level rise. Middle and high school students are trying to mitigate the effects of climate change through the Green Rhinos Program. This microproject will allow 20 Green Rhino Leaders to receive transformational leadership training . They will work with 80 more students to conserve the Sundarbans.
The Sundarbans, the only mangrove forests with a population of tigers, is an ecologically fragile area. A part of it is a World Heritage Site. The Sundarbans is threatened with the adverse effects of climate change. A rise in temperature and sea level rise is adversely affecting the lives of people as well as the flora and fauna.
20 middle and high school students, who are part of the Green Rhinos Program will participate in a transformational leadership training. They will be the Green Rhinos Leaders. They will work in school teams with 5 members in each team. During the training they will create projects to conserve the nature of Sundarbans. Each team will work with 20 other Green Rhinos from their school to implement projects like large scale tree plantation, garbage cleaning and composting, etc.
The Green Rhinos Program helps young people to know more about nature and to relate with it. The action projects that they conduct helpsthem to experience that they can make a positive contribution to nature conservation here and now. The Program creates a life-long passion for nature conservation. 5,000 Green Rhinos will be created and each in turn will impact at least another 10 people. Thus more than 50,000 people will be impacted. Their projects will have a lasting positive impact.
