On November 15, volunteers from the Idjwi Island Education Fund boarded a boat in Goma to travel to Idjwi Island and deliver supplies to the children at the Buhumba Village School. On Friday, November 16, our volunteers delivered two new high-quality chalk boards to the sixth grade class room. The students, their parents, teachers, school director, and local officials all attended a ceremony at a local church to receive the donations. The entire community expressed their gratitude to the Fund and the generous donors to our micro project for providing this support to the school. A representative of HEAL Africa joined our volunteers for the delivery of the supplies.
Sadly, this hopeful moment was disrupted by the news that rebel forces in the North Kivu province on the mainland in DR Congo have seized the regional capital, Goma. In this instance, the children on Idjwi Island are somewhat fortunate because they are isolated from the violence. Our volunteers and their families, however, live in Goma. We have confirmed that one of our volunteers was able to return to Goma through an alternative route and another is attempting to return in the same manner. The third volunteer is remaining on Idjwi Island for the time being. We ask that you keep all of the people in Goma in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
