Camp Shout Out impacts up to 200 young people who stutter each year. We impact young people who stutter who enroll as campers AND we impact young people who stutter by providing state-of-the-art hands-on training for speech-language pathologists and graduate student. This project will pay to bring in well known experts in the field of childhood stuttering to develop and implement the training program.
Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in up to 5% of all school age youth often resulting in significant emotional & social consequences, including communication withdrawal, bullying, & shame. A survey by the National Stuttering Assoc. revealed that 80% of youth who stutter (YWS) reported being bullied & 40% of adults had been denied a job or promotion. YWS can become great communicators who exhibit communicative confidence & competence when provided with adequate therapy services.
Camp Shout Out provides high quality, hands-on training to speech-language pathologists and graduate students to improve their skills and confidence when working with young people who stutter. This training occurs throughout the session of Camp Shout Out and consists of lecture, observation, problem solving and hands-on therapy while being guided by well known experts in the field of fluency disorders. This project will provide the funding needed to bring in faculty members and trainers
This project will build great communicators by providing training and treatment both directly and indirectly to approximately 200 young people who stutter each year. Camp Shout Out will become a model for the training of speech-language pathologists and graduate students as they seek to deepen their knowledge and and understanding when working with young people who stutter.
