Camp Shout Out provides speech therapy for young people who stutter and training for speech therapists and graduate students in a summer camp setting. We Build Great Communicators, with focus on helping children become more Attentive, Assertive, Confident, Effective, & Pro-Active. This project will allow our campers to shine on stage. We will be holding our 2nd annual "Camp Shout Out's Got Talent" and we expect many of our campers to challenge themselves as they show off their own unique talents
Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in 5% of school age youth often resulting in significant emotional & social consequences, such as communication withdrawal, bullying, & shame. Many youth who stutter experience a great deal of fear when faced with everyday communication tasks such as ordering in a restaurant, speaking in class, or answering the phone. This fear of speaking can have significant academic, social and behavioral ramifications effecting grades and even career choices.
A recent survey revealed that 80% of youth who stutter reported being bullied. Youth who stutter can become great communicators who exhibit communicative confidence & competence when provided with adequate therapy services. Camp Shout Out's Got Talent will allow our campers to challenge themselves to perform in front of the entire camp audience. By providing a place where kids can take chances without the fear of being teased or ridiculed we are helping to build communicative confidence.
This project will build great communicators by providing training and treatment both directly and indirectly to approximately 200 young people who stutter each year. Camp Shout Out will become a model for the training of speech-language pathologists and graduate students as they seek to deepen their knowledge and and understanding when working with young people who stutter.
