Morgan is a 15 year old beautiful girl who stutters from Michigan. In school she is reluctant to speak to peers, because of her stuttering, and usually sits quietly. This project will raise the necessary funds for Morgan to attend Camp Shout Out in 2013 where she will continue to receive intensive speech therapy while participating in fun summer camp activities with other youth who stutter. This project is designed to increase effective communication skills, and improve overall self-confidence.
Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in up to 5% of all school age youth, many of whom experience a great deal of fear when faced with everyday communication situations. Morgan has been stuttering since early childhood and receives speech therapy in the school environment. She has been teased and picked on by some of her classmates because of her stuttering. Morgan is the only person in her high school who stutters.
At Camp Shout Out Morgan is not the only one who stutters. She is able to interact with young people of all ages who also stutter. When Morgan is at Camp Shout Out she blossoms. She gains more self-confidence and is able to communicate whenever she wants without the fear of teasing or bullying. She is able to take these skills and put them into practice when she heads back to school. It takes lots of practice and time in order to become a great communicator and Morgan is well on her way!
This project will build great communicators by providing training and treatment both directly and indirectly to approximately 200 young people who stutter each year. Camp Shout Out will become a model for the training of speech-language pathologists and graduate students as they seek to deepen their knowledge and and understanding when working with young people who stutter. Camp Shout Out Builds Great Communicators. Great Communicators Change the World. Camp Shout Out is changing the world!
