Camp Shout Out strives to help young people who stutter become great communicators. During our summer camp program we provide intensive therapy which includes a variety of immediate and tangible reinforcements. Our campers improve very quickly with frequent reinforcement. We plan to use this funding to have a celebration at the end of our session that has been earned by our campers. They will collect reinforcement throughout the week and 'spend' it at a final 'Carnival'.
Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in up to 5% of all school age youth often resulting in significant emotional and social consequences, including communication withdrawal, bullying, and shame. A survey revealed that 80% of youth who stutter reported being bullied while 40% of adults reported being denied a job or promotion. Young people who stutter can become great communicators who exhibit communicative confidence and competence when provided with adequate therapy services.
Camp Shout Out provides speech therapy for young people who stutter and training for speech therapists and graduate students in a summer camp setting. We Build Great Communicators, with focus on helping children become more Attentive, Assertive, Confident, Effective, and Pro-Active. This project will provide the funding to motivate our campers to become the best communicators possible.
This project will build great communicators by providing training and treatment both directly and indirectly to approximately 200 young people who stutter each year. Camp Shout Out has become the model for the training of speech-language pathologists and graduate students as they seek to deepen their knowledge and and understanding when working with young people who stutter. Camp Shout Out Builds Great Communicators. Great Communicators Change the World. Camp Shout Out is changing the world!
