Camp Shout Out Friends:
Stuttering is a disorder that is estimated to impact up to 5% of school-age youth. However, there are many young people who stutter who have NEVER met another person who stutters.
One of our teen campers stated: “Stuttering is a very lonely disorder, you feel like there is nobody else in the world with this same problem. I didn’t meet another person who stuttered until my first year at Camp Shout Out.”
At Camp Shout Out not only do young people meet and hang out with other young people who stutter they ALSO get to meet successful, professional adults who stutter.
In 2013, one of the highlights of the week was when the campers and their parents met Lieutenant Murphy of the Chicago Fire Department. They were able to hear about his struggles and his triumphs. What it was like to fear something and find the courage to take a risk. They were able to ask him questions and share stories throughout the week.
Most importantly they were able to understand that they can be anything they desire to be. in spite of stuttering sometimes.
In 2014, because of your generous donations, we will be able to expand our ‘Be Our Guest’ program and include other successful professional adults who stutter. This will help our campers and their families realize that the only way stuttering can hold them back is if they let it!
We hope you will continue with us on this journey as together, we help change the world for children who stutter, and help children who stutter change the world!
