School is officially in session in Cameroon! One of CAMAAY's volunteers is going to teach students s the basic measurement tools of water flow.
However, another of CAMAAYS's dedicated volunteers has taught the water management comittee in Bengang how to measure water flow: it was measured by filling a 10L bucket in 4 seconds, and then converting the units into cubic meter per day. This measurement method needs to be improved, because it is not precise enough.
The biggest threat when the dry season hits the North West Province will be the poor uality of water. Thus, we have started to sensitize kids to the health issues that bad water leads to. We then introduced an easy, cost effective and cheap method to treat water: the Solar Water Disinfection, or SODIS method. The water that kids will take from running streams during the dry season will then be treated by exposing it in direct sunlight during at least 6 hours, in a PET bottle. More details about this method can be found on http://www.sodis.ch/
This method has by now only been introduced in the primary school of Kose-Enyoh, but we will visit a dozen of schools in the coming weeks, before the dry season starts.
We are so pleased with the support we have received, and with the enthusiasm the students are showing!
