With JA Titan, Shaw High School students aren't just playing they're learning. Titan helps students learn and practice essential real-world skills such as critical-thinking, communication and analysis that are not always available in the traditional classroom or at home. It combines the thrill of online gaming with lessons that empower them to make sound decisions about high school graduation and career planning.
East Cleveland faces economic and social challenges prevalent in many at-risk urban communities throughout the U.S. It has a higher rate of persons living below the poverty threshold than Ohio's statewide rate. It has a lower rate of high school graduates and its residents earn less than half the state average income.
JA programs demonstrate the link between educational attainment and financial independence. JA Titan gives students exposure to careers, role models and access to scholarships. Students at East Cleveland's high school, Shaw High, experience unique learning opportunities that empower them to explore options post-high school that will offer them financial stability and mobility out of their high-risk community.
It's been proven that students who receive JA six times during their school career are 90% more likely to graduate from high school. The goal of our project will be for youth to develop attitudes aligned with high school graduation and 21st century skills that prepare them for success. In addition, JA programs improve student academic performance and achievement leading to increased graduation rates.
