JA Business Week impacted a record 265 high school students in June 2013, up from just 170 students last year. Yonug people participated in a variety of workshops throughout the week, including mock interviews with business volunteers, financial planning, leadership skills, networking and business etiquette and so much more. Throughout the week, teams of 10 students formed "companies" to compete in real business projects for Jamba Juice, Microsoft or the Denver Cutthroats Hockey Team. Each student company had a business volunteer who mentored them throughout the week,. JA Business Week 2013 culminated in students making their project presentations to a panel of 25 distinguished judges from the participating companies and the community. The winning teams from each project will have their idea implemented by the company! For example, the Microsoft store in Lone Tree, Colorado will implement students ideas and marketing strategies for a midnight launch party of a new product this coming fall. Thank you for investing in the future of Colorado young people!
Students had this to say of their experience:
"I know it might not seem like a lot but for a kid who grew up in the poverty of Africa without resources is a dream come to be given the opportunity to work with Microsoft. I have learned so much valuable knowledge that will change my life and be an asset to my success. I have grown as a leader and learned how to persevere and be myself."
"One of the most helpful parts of this week has been surrounding myself with people who will someday be my competitors or co-workers. My “small town” of Berthoud has kept me from experiencing many of the opportunities that many of the urban high schoolers have, but this week has helped me broaden my horizons and be able to connect with a lot of new people."
"After JA Business Week, I am a lot more engaged and better prepared to enter the business world. I learned about wealth management, how to apply for scholarships, and about how to be an entrepreneur. JA Business Week has brightened the outlook of my future. I will take home the most important thing; how to be a successful and respected business woman."
"I learned how to work better in a group and how to share my thought sin a more constructive way. I have learned how to budget and save for other things in my life, even the rainy days. I felt that even with my dyslexia I was able to contribute just like everyone else. I am now really excited and prepared for next year when I move out and go to college."
