This project will bring 600 books to two communities in Belem and Benevides, in the Brazilian Amazon. With $4,000, we will create two welcoming community libraries with curated children's collections, mats, and bookshelves, offering not just books, but tools for imagination, literacy, identity, and opportunity. By supporting, you are not only placing books on shelves. You are strengthening literacy in a region historically underserved, expanding cultural access in the Brazilian Amazon.
In the outskirts of Belem and in Benevides, Para, children are growing up with limited access to books and consistent literacy support. The challenge is not only educational, it is social and structural. Low access to books directly affects literacy development, vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and long-term academic performance. Without early and consistent exposure to reading, children face greater barriers to completing their education and accessing future opportunities.
Vaga Lume provides high-quality children's book collections, along with mats and bookshelves, transforming simple rooms into welcoming, child-centered reading spaces. But our work goes far beyond donating books. We know access alone is not enough, engagement is essential. That's why we implement our proven reading mediation methodology, actively cultivating reading habits and meaningful connections between children and books.
This project will break the cycle of limited access to literacy. By creating two fully equipped community libraries, it establishes lasting centers of learning and culture. Beyond improving reading habits, these libraries become safe spaces for belonging, representation, and imagination. As Debora Fernandes from Mirinzal (MA), one former beneficiary, shared: "The library was a turning point in our community. Beyond being a reading space, it became a space for cultural expression".
