Only 23% of women in rural Sindh are literate. The rest of the 85% females in rural Sindh are deprived of basic education because of having to live in strict traditional culture, facing poverty, having no knowledge and not having enough resources to gain education. Starting this pilot phase of Adult Literacy Education program through Primary Education Project, more than 812 women in rural Sindh are targeted to be provided with the basic right of education.
In rural Sindh, for years there has been a strict patriarchal culture that governs tribal communities. Due to the patriarchal rule, the women related to this culture have been facing difficult challenges that have deprived them of their basic rights such as, education, gender equality, right to make decisions, and bound to early marriage (which is a very harmful practice). The pilot phase of Adult Literacy Education will help more than 812 women in rural Sindh to have the access to their rights.
The Women's Empowerment Program is working on the front lines to help establish Adult Literacy Centers in the five areas of rural Sindh where PEP has its schools. 83 Adult Literacy Centers will be established in those five areas, and the Coordinators of the WEP program will be responsible to run those centers. In addition to this, a special manual for Adult Literacy Program is being developed to help women learn and be trained according to the Adult Literacy Manual.
PEP is currently working in 84 villages with 106 teachers. We are teaching almost 5,000 children and indirectly benefitting over 34,000 people in Sindh! Sustainability of schools is one of the priorities of PEP and many efforts have been made to ensure the long-term establishment of our schools. Communities are seeing changes through their access to clean water, greater sanitation, and electricity because of the empowerment of Community Citizen Boards and PEP efforts to strengthen confidence.
