Vijana Amani Pamoja (VAP) integrates sexual health and reproductive rights training and sports in order to meet the expressed needs of young men and women in Kenya. But after years of running football (soccer) programs, they found some girls still encountered challenges that kept them from participating.
Nancy and team decided to hold focus groups with the girls they serve. They learned that many of them still didn’t have the opportunity to play football because of their families’ cultural and religious beliefs.
In response to this feedback, VAP opened up new options for girls to play different sports of their choice. These sports open up the opportunity for conversations about sexual health and reproductive rights within the safe team environment.

VAP’s commitment to impact stuck with Thomas, who visited VAP through GlobalGiving’s Field Program. “VAP is a fantastic organization making a real impact in their local community in the areas of HIV/AIDS education and empowerment of girls,” Thomas said.
