Vincent at CHHASE wanted to figure out why students were dropping out of school at alarming rates. By interviewing students to gather feedback, the CHHASE team demonstrated their commitment to becoming more effective. Read their Listen, Act, Learn. Repeat. story.
Community Health, Housing and Social Education (CHHASE) runs many programs to support people who live in marginalized communities in India. The organization’s leaders have a particular passion to support youth from lower castes. While they were running projects with youth in a particular area, they started to notice a large drop-out rate at the area schools.
“All children out of school are in child labor. Being out of school is equal to the worst form of child labor and harmful to the overall growth and development of the child.”
— Vincent, CHHASE Project Leader
Vincent and CHHASE decided to interview individual children to find out why they’d dropped out of school. Was it because they weren’t motivated? No. By speaking with the children, they found that many students wanted to learn, but they said the schools had high standards, and they weren’t able to complete their homework at home because they didn’t have the support they needed. Many said their parents were illiterate.
After gathering feedback from the community, “We realized the need for after school education,” said Vincent. They began to start these after school programs, and now nearly 1200 children attend regularly. The drop-out rate in their project area is now virtually zero. And people are taking notice. “Mr.Vincent is a very kind-hearted person and the positive vibes that he spreads has really helped the individuals in the organization work with passion. CHHASE has really considered the feedback they’ve received,” said Uma, after visiting CHHASE through GlobalGiving’s Field Program.
