GlobalGiving Climate Action Fund

Just three months ago, you met the five new environmental champions leading GlobalGiving’s Climate Action Fund—and you won’t believe what they’ve accomplished since! 

• Reef Check Malaysia organized a recycling buy-back program called Trash to Cash on Tioman Island, Malaysia. Community members were able to sell recyclable items for cash, supporting Reef Check Malaysia’s overarching mission to reduce pollution on the island.

"The island we live on is our treasure so we need to ensure its cleanliness and safety, not only for us (humans) but also for the environment,” Reef Check team member Faizal shared. 

• Sadhana Forest Kenya has implemented several new kitchen gardens, which provide families in Kenya with a sustainable food source while absorbing carbon. They’ve also helped community members build fences to protect their fruit trees from a surprising threat: hungry wild zebras! 

• Earlier this month, Ecologic Development Funddelivered 36 fuel-efficient Chispa stoves to the communities of San Juan and Barra Sarstun in the Sarstun Multiple Use Area in Livingston, Guatemala. These stoves significantly reduce communities’ dependence on firewood, protecting local forests and reducing smoke emissions. Heidi, a graduate student from the University of San Carlos, Guatemala, has been supporting distribution.

“After the formal delivery of the stove and recommendations for its use, you can witness the joy of each family in using their fuel-efficient stove. You can see the satisfaction and gratitude toward the organization and the people who make this change possible for the better in their home,” she shared. 

• After months in lockdown, Instituto de la Naturaleza y la Sociedad de Oaxaca, A.C. has been able to reopen their Pedregal Demonstration Center to all public activities, including a childrens’ program, guided tours, workshops, and other trainings! A vital part of INSO’s work to conserve the natural wonders in the Oaxaca region, this center will give local conservationists the chance to connect, plan, and learn more about local climate conservation. 

• Instituto Chaikuni launched a new workshop to teach practices drawn from Indigenous Amazonian knowledge called bioconstruction and permaculture. These skills will help local farmers build sustainability and increase profits over time.
