Donate to Help Save the White Rhinos

Hello from Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Kenya! We are four 18-year-olds currently on our gap year. We have been staying at Ol Pejeta and during this time we have realised the importance of the wildlife conservation. Last week we visited the world’s last two northern white rhinos, Najin and her daughter Fatu. We saw how important these incredible animals are to the eco-system and how we must play our part in protecting them. Rhinos all around the world are highly vulnerable as their horns are in high demand for reasons such as symbolising wealth as well as beliefs that they can be used as an aphrodisiac. This has caused a drastic increase in rhino poaching, leaving them functionally extinct. In order to save the northern white rhinos, a ground-breaking procedure took place in 2019 and then again in 2020. A team of international scientists harvested eggs from the two females and successfully fertilised the eggs into viable embryos using the sperm from deceased northern white rhino bulls. Thanks to this science, there are now 5 pure northern white rhino embryos being stored in liquid nitrogen which will soon be transferred to surrogate southern white rhinos in an incredible attempt to revive the species. Inspired by the rhinos and with a will to make a difference, we are setting off on a long sponsored hike on February 11th from one side of Ol Pejeta to the other in order to support this cause. We will be completing this over four days, averaging around 15km a day and camping in the bush over-night along our route.
