Empower Victims of Boko Haram
A fundraiser by Elenie Opffer
Summary This project will renovate and equip a skills acquisition centre in Jimeta, North Eastern Nigeria, providing psycho-social support, mentoring and livelihoods training for financial independence to 1000 rape victims and widows traumatized by the violent activities of Boko Haram and other insurgent groups. $87,000 total goal $80,894 remaining 64 donors 1 monthly donor 3 months Challenge The activities of Boko Haram in North East Nigeria has resulted in over 50, 000 widows and rape victims according to The Premium Times of Nigeria. As former wives or sex slaves, most of these women suffer from trauma and discrimination resulting from their forceful association with Boko Haram. In many instances, these women are now fully responsible for their families' wellbeing due to loss of their spouse. This project will support 1000 rape victims and widows in Adamawa and Bornu states. Solution This project will provide psycho-social support, mentoring, and livelihoods training to 1000 rape victims and widows. These women will be counselled and provided with skills to cope with trauma including mentoring at a well equipped centre. At the same time they will receive training and empowerment in tailoring and cattle rearing, that will help them to be financially independent and be able to provide for their families' economic needs. Long-Term Impact This project will allow 1000 women who were raped and widowed to receive psycho-social support, mentoring and livelihoods training. This will help them to overcome the challenges of trauma, stigma and other psychological effects associated with rape. Additionally, they will also be able to rise out of poverty by providing for their families' health and well-being, and have a positive effect for the whole society.
