Project Summary
HDF Malawi Canada is seeking $4,000 in funding to implement a community support and integration project for newcomers and refugees living in Surrey, British Columbia.
The project will focus on helping newcomers build confidence, reduce isolation, improve communication skills, and better understand life in Canada through community gatherings, peer support, mentorship, practical integration workshops, and culturally inclusive wellness activities.
Many newcomers arrive in Canada feeling alone, overwhelmed, and disconnected. They often struggle with language barriers, cultural adjustment, lack of social support, and difficulty navigating daily life in a new country. This project aims to create safe and welcoming spaces where newcomers can connect, learn, and feel supported during their settlement journey.
This project will strengthen community belonging, improve emotional well-being, and help participants build meaningful relationships and support systems within the Surrey community.

Personal Story and Inspiration
This project is inspired by my own journey as a newcomer in Canada. When I first arrived, everything felt unfamiliar. While I came with hope for a better future, I also experienced loneliness, uncertainty, and difficulty adjusting to a completely new environment. I struggled to understand communication styles, Canadian systems, and how to build connections in a place where I knew very few people. One of the hardest parts was feeling isolated and disconnected. I did not have a strong support system or community network, and there were moments when I felt overwhelmed trying to navigate life alone. Over time, I realized how important community support, mentorship, and human connection are for newcomers trying to build a new life. What helped me most was meeting people who listened, guided me, and made me feel less alone. Eventually, through networking and community support, I was able to gain confidence, access opportunities, and feel more connected to my new environment. Those experiences inspired me to create spaces where newcomers and refugees can feel welcomed, supported, and valued during their own journeys. This project was created to help other newcomers and refugees feel less isolated and more empowered as they adjust to life in Canada.
Background and Need
Surrey is home to many immigrant and refugee families from diverse cultural backgrounds. While newcomers arrive with skills, education, and dreams for a better future, many face barriers that make settlement difficult.
These challenges include:
• Language and communication barriers
• Social isolation and loneliness
• Lack of confidence
• Limited community connections
• Difficulty understanding Canadian systems and culture
• Mental and emotional stress related to settlement
Many newcomers often struggle silently while trying to adapt to a completely new environment. Without proper support, isolation and emotional stress can negatively affect confidence, emotional well-being, and successful community integration.
Newcomers need safe and welcoming spaces where they can ask questions, connect with others, build friendships, and access practical support and guidance. This project aims to strengthen community belonging and improve newcomer well-being through culturally inclusive support activities that encourage confidence, connection, and peer support.
Project Goals
The project aims to:
• Reduce social isolation among newcomers and refugees
• Build confidence and communication skills
• Help participants better understand life in Canada
• Encourage community engagement and networking
• Create supportive peer and mentorship connections
• Promote emotional wellness and a sense of belonging
