Late last year I left the UK to work with Tea Leaf Trust in the tea plantation area of Sri Lanka which has proven to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. Since then I've witnessed firsthand the incredible changes they're making in the lives of young people in tea estates. The challenges faced by these communities are immense, but education is a powerful tool for long-term improvement.
I'm doing sponsored tea pick to raise £250, which will go towards bus money for students at the Tea Leaf Centre in Nuwara Eliya for the remainder of the year. This fundraiser is also a way to highlight the hard work of the women who pick our tea and earn little more than £2 a day for their labour.
You may have seen on the news about the recent economic and political crises in Sri Lanka. These crises have made it difficult for many students to afford travel expenses, as families are forced to choose between sending their children to school or putting food on the table.
Your support would mean that even more young people can continue their education and gain increased opportunities for a brighter future. Tea Leaf Trust offers a one-year diploma program for young people from tea estates, and over 82% of students go on to further education or to secure employment after completing the programme, helping to lift their families out of extreme poverty.
Your contribution, no matter the size, will help these students travel to school and access the education they deserve.
