Clairwood Secondary in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa - is an ordinary school specializing in technical subjects. There are not many around mainly due to the imbalances of the past. It is a parent's wish in the area to see their children at a school like this, however, most are unemployed and cannot afford the fees. Your kind support will ensure that 500+ learners are empowered with critical extra tuition in Maths and Physical Science. In 2022, the school achieved 76% increase in Maths. Learners are also provided with free food and transportation.
This is reiterated by a number of participating learners, that it helps immensely with concentration and energy, as extra classes happen right after official school hours. Most of the learners stay far and cannot afford to go home after school to eat etc, so the food and transportation means that United Way South Africa (UWSA) provides, are critical components and the success factor of the programme.
According to a past survey conducted few years ago, Clairwood Secondary School had a total number of 1167+ learners served by 46 teachers, making a student-teacher ratio of 26:1. This year the school has seen a drop in the number of teachers. There are about 34, who regardless of the challenges, are still doing an incredible job, taking even more learners each and expecting better results as the final examinations have been concluded and schools preparing to close for the Festive Season holidays.
Mr. Yugan Naidoo, the Principal of the school, was quoted previously mentioning that: ‘The school is seriously forging ahead in its endeavours to introduce critical technical subjects… ' and further regards these interventions as 'a silver lining, in light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, for the benefit of the learners.’
It is the fervent wish of the Principal and staff that current and prospective learners grab these opportunities of extra tuition etc, which will open doors for them, not only locally but globally as well. He concluded: ‘In the wise words of our late President Mr. Nelson Mandela: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world’.
